This landmark recording series in four volumes culminates with this 2-CD album. This fourth volume brings to light several first recordings. The performances by Dan Poynton are assured and idiomatic, presenting an unseen side of this pre-eminent New Zealand composer.

The four-volume set of Lilburn's piano music is revelatory. Each volume offers a programme of works from different periods of his career, ranging from the whimsical to the serious and profoundly moving; each volume has left me looking forward eagerly to the next. Poynton's playing is exemplary and the production standards of a very high order, including excellent notes and reproductions of paintings by Leo Benseman and Rita Angus. The set does full justice to Lilburn's music and is also an outstanding tribute to New Zealand culture.
