About the work:
The composer writes: 'The creation of Red Zen was part of my ongoing creative and spiritual journey in discovering the confluence of Eastern and Western musical languages. Set as a series of “images,” the music unfolds as a tone poem, traveling from one exotic scene to the next. As well, this work was specifically written for the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra, so much of the music was composed for certain players in mind. Thus, many solos, duos, and trios are heard throughout the piece giving key players the opportunity to showcase their talents.'
